Get the Support You Need-Navicular Sling Taping

Here, by popular demand, we are a going to review one of our most utilized taping techniques, a navicular sling. In case you missed it, a few weeks ago we discussed the potential benefits, proper utilization and different types of tape. Below is the link to that post for your review.

Navicular sling taping is a form of taping utilized to help provide stability to the rearfoot and to provide support to the arch of the foot. We typically use this for injuries that are related to excessive foot pronation. Some of these injuries include:

  • Shin Splints
  • Tibial Stress Fracture
  • Posterior Tibialis Tendinitis
  • Plantar Fascia Pain
  • IT Band Pain
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

A navicular sling taping technique can be utilized to reduce pain, improve mechanics, provide support to the foot and ankle throughout movement and facilitate proprioceptive feedback to the brain regarding the foot’s position in space. Clinically, we often use it to allow an athlete to continue to participate in their desired activity with less pain, greater support and more confidence. It can also be utilized as a tool to assess whether someone may benefit from an orthotic. Consistent relief of symptoms with the tape would suggest that an individual might benefit from trial of an orthotic.

Below is a link to a video of how to complete a navicular sling taping technique using dynamic tape. This is a technique that we use very often and have great success with and one that we often get requests to create a tutorial for.

*** Special Note: If at anytime the tape is uncomfortable, irritates the skin, causes itching of the skin, causes increase in pain, causes pins and needles or numbness/loss of sensation in the foot, it should be removed immediately.
